College of Arts & Sciences

Brief History:

MSU-Buug Community High School was established in June 1971. It started its operation as a self-supporting unit of the Mindanao State University in Marawi City until it was fully absorbed and become a full-fledged unit of the University in 1976.

Envisioning a bigger educational institution to cater to the social and economic needs of the unprivileged people in the province and neighboring areas, the school administrator, together with some local and provincial leaders moved for the elevation of the unit from high school to a collegiate level.

Thus, on December 13, 1982, the MSU Buug Community High School was elevated to a collegiate level by virtue of BOR Resolution 492-B, series of 1982, and was known as the MSU-Buug College. Consequently, the unit was given the authority to offer the first two-year general college courses in Agriculture, Education, Forestry, and Liberal Arts.

On May 16, 1989, the Unit, through BOR Resolution no. 55 series of 1989 was given the authority to offer the third year and the fourth year curriculum of the four courses (as mentioned above) in a staggered basis. The four colleges as spelled out in the said resolution were: College of Agriculture, College of Education, College of Forestry, and College of Liberal Arts. The BOR Resolution limited the offerings of the College of Liberal Arts to three areas of specialization, namely; English, Filipino and Mathematics.

In the year 1992, the College of Liberal Arts had produced its first batch of graduates in Bachelor of Arts, major in Filipino, and the following year the first batch of graduates in Bachelor of Arts, major in English. Since then, the Department has been producing graduates in the two major fields, who are now employed in various jobs in the province, through the country and even abroad.

With the assumption of a new University leadership in the person of Dr. Ricardo F. De Leon and the subsequent appointment of Sultan Taha G. Sarip as the head of the unit in 2006, the College of Liberal Arts was changed to College of Arts and Sciences with its first Dean, Prof. Rosita D. Mendija (2006-2012). Furthermore, new courses were then proposed and opened to answer the clamor of the students in the newly created province of Zamboanga Sibugay and nearby provinces. The following courses were proposed for adoption: Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Public Administration. Moreover, Bachelor of Science in Nursing was also offered in the year 2006 and is still offered today as an extension program of the College of Health and Science of the MSU-Marawi.

It is a season of unprecedented change for Philippine Education shaped by aggressive reform measures from within, with the full implementation of K to 12 system in 2016 having an addition of two years in the Senior High School. Hence,  the Mindanao State University- Buug College of Arts and Sciences has well responded to this challenge as well as to the  Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum  by revising all curricula to answer the needs of the time and student clienteles and to offer the following courses: Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (BAELS); Bachelor of Arts in Filipino (BAFIL); Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA); Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM); Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT)  and, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BS Nursing), and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (BS Mathematics). However, BS Mathematics program only lived shortly because of its continued decreasing number of students and was officially closed last August 2019. All of these changes happened under the leadership of the second dean, Prof. Josephine S. Merquillo (2012-2019) who is now the Vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

At present, the College of Arts and Sciences has confronted massive changes with the separation of some departments in the college such as: Public Administration, Information Technology, Hospitality Management and soon the Nursing Department effective 2nd semester of 2020- 2021. Thus, the remaining undergraduate programs of the college are only two: the BAELS under the English Department and the BAFIL under the Filipino Department. On the other hand, the transfer of supervision of the Graduate School to each college has resulted to the additional program, that is, the Master in Peace and Development since the faculty members of the program belong to the college. With its metamorphosis, the college is thriving as it is still the service college of the campus with the help of other departments such as: Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Science, and Physical Education.

The humble traces of the college history are inspirations to push relentlessly the boundaries of the College of Arts and Sciences to respond incessantly to the emerging educational needs in the future. As a matter of fact, with the leadership of the new dean, Dr. Rovy M. Banguis (2019-present) and with its strong linkages with the English departments of the MSU- System, the college is looking forward to offer new program, Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Cultural Studies (BALCS) in the 1st semester of 2021-2022 as well as the offering of Master of Arts in English Language Studies (MAELS) targeting the 1st semester of 2022-2023. Considering the number and the expertise of the teaching force, other possible undergraduate programs which will be offered soon will be Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Bio) and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (AB Pol Sci) respectively.
