BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION 

“The College of Education, Mindanao State University (MSU)- Buug , commenced its operation in 1982 as part of the MSU Buug College with only first and second year courses offered, leading to Bachelor in Secondary Education, major in Biology, English, Filipino and Mathematics. The third and fourth year course offerings were taken from the other campuses under the MSU System preferably in the Main Campus, Marawi City. 

During the 137th meeting of the MSU System Board of Regents (BOR) held at the Army and Navy Club, Manila, last May 16, 1990, upon the recommendation of the University President and the Executive Committee of the members of the BOR, the request of MSU Buug to open and offer the third and fourth year courses was approved on a staggered basis (the third year was offered in 1989 and the fourth year was offered in 1990) following on the same guidelines in order to complete the required number of years in the Bachelors degree in Secondary Education, by virtue of Resolution No. 55, series of 1989. 

Further, due to the strong demand of the stakeholders, a request to open a Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEEd), General Education was realized by virtue of BOR Resolution No. 62, series of 1999, thus, MSU Buug is now offering a complete four-year degree program in BEEd, General Education, effective first semester of the Academic Year 2009 – 2010.  

Furthermore, during the 254th meeting of the Board of Regents held on March 22, 2021 via Zoom teleconferencing and face-to-face at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City, BOR Resolution No.8, Series of 2021 resolved that, upon the recommendation of the University President and the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, the abolition of the Graduate School and devolving the function to the various colleges with a graduate programs, were approved. Thus, the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd), Major in School Administration of this institution is now under the full supervision of the College of Education as one of its department.  

At present, the said graduate and undergraduate degree programs of this college still exist and the latter continues its record of good standing in the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LEPT), performing the result that rallies competitively to the entire MSU System and beyond.

COLLEGE GOALS

The College of Education is committed to attain the following goals: 

1. Provide quality education and training to prospective teachers;

2. Offer advanced professional training for school administrators; 

3. Strengthen the extension program through non-formal education; 

4. Enrich programs for values education to promote inter-cultural understanding, solidarity, peace and development; 

5. Serve as prime mover in the preservation and enrichment of the cultural heritage of the country;

6. Initiate and facilitate researches on teacher education and other related fields; and 

7. Develop among prospective teachers’ knowledge and skills in the transformation processes involved towards a culture of peace and development. 

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ELEMENTARY TEACHING 

The Department of Elementary Teaching aims to: 

1. Provide prospective teachers of the pre-school and elementary education the knowledge about the growth and development of children; 

2. Train students to become highly skilled and competent teachers in the different subject areas; 

3. Inculcate proper sense of values among prospective teachers; 

4. Prepare future teachers in community relations and development; 

5. Develop prospective teachers to have a keen sense of understanding and appreciation of their own as well as other culture and traditions;

6. Provide training programs for pre-school and elementary teachers of public and private schools in the region to upgrade their teaching competencies, work values and attitudes; and 

7. Develop research skills of the future educators. 

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SECONDARY TEACHING

The Department of Secondary Teaching aims to: 

1. Prepare prospective teachers in the secondary teaching the knowledge about the growth and development of adolescents; 

2. Produce highly skilled and competent secondary school teachers in the field of discipline being pursued; 

3. Inculcate proper sense of values among prospective teachers; 

4. Prepare secondary teaching students in community relations and development; 

5. Develop students to have a keen sense of understanding and appreciation of their own as well as others’ culture and traditions; 

6. Provide training programs for secondary level teachers of public and private schools in the region to upgrade their teaching competencies, work values and attitudes; and 

7. Develop research skills of prospective teachers in the secondary level in their quest for knowledge and truth.
